Lori Bookstein Fine Art is pleased to announce an exhibition of recent paintings and drawings by Susannah Phillips. This is the artist's fourth solo show at Lori Bookstein Fine Art.
This latest body of work continues the artist's exploration of variations on singular themes. While the artist has continued to paint and draw the landscape that made up her last show, three new motifs have emerged. The first predominant tableaux is an interior scene of a shadowy basement. Articulated in dark, squared geometries, the otherwise abstract composition is identified only by a stovepipe and a flight of stairs bisecting the picture plane. These stairs lead to what is presumably a door to the ground floor, illuminated by a halo of light shining through the doorframe.
Susannah Phillips: New Work will also mark the debut of two new still life motifs. The first is a collection of rocks and other objects. A striking stone mosaic reveals a beautiful geometric checkerboard pattern, the angularity of which stands in sharp contrast to the otherwise organic form which contains it. The second still life depicts an arrangement of what appears to be the yokes and lee boards of a sailing canoe. Propped up on their ends, this composition typifies the artist’s tendency to paint objects that lose their functional purposes to become sculptural forms that invite meditation and contemplation. Phillips’s paintings are about restraint and more often than not, their meanings are not articulated by what is depicted, but rather by what is omitted.
Susannah Phillips was born in 1952 in Boston, Massachusetts but was raised in London. She attended the Slade School of Fine Art in London, studying under William Coldstream and Euan Uglow. Her paintings have been in group exhibitions in London, New York and Provincetown, MA, and are included in numerous private collections. In 2014, she was awarded the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation Residency. The artist lives and works in New York.
