Kikuo Saito (b. 1939, Toyko - d. 2016, New York) was born in Tokyo, Japan and moved to New York City in 1966. There he was a studio assistant to Helen Frankenthaler, Kenneth Noland and Larry Poons. In addition to his painting practice, Saito is also well-known for his theater work that incorporates costumes, light, music and dance. The artist's knowledge of choreography and stage direction may have directly influenced his approach to painting as he typically painted on the floor, circling and moving over the canvas to create each composition. The artist’s work has been exhibited both nationally and internationally. His work is included in numerous public and private collections including the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, the Nasher Museum of Art, Duke University, Durham, NC, and the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, Ridgefield, CT, among others.
